How this calculator works and what to know before using it

What this calculator does

Performs advanced math: trigonometry, logarithms, powers, roots, and more. Supports degrees and radians.

How to use it

  1. Tap buttons to build your expression.
  2. Switch DEG/RAD for trigonometric functions.
  3. Press = to evaluate, AC to clear, ⌫ to delete.

Formula used

Elementary functions

Standard functions: sin, cos, tan, log, ln, sqrt, powers, and parentheses for order of operations.

Source. Sine, cosine, and tangent in degree mode multiply the angle by π/180. Logarithm is base 10. Natural log is base e. Powers, roots, and parentheses use ordinary real arithmetic. NIST Digital Library of Mathematical Functions, chapter 4. NIST DLMF, elementary functions.

Example

sin(30°) = 0.5 · √(16) = 4 · 2³ = 8

Good to know

  • Use parentheses to control order of operations.
  • Division by zero produces an error.

Common questions

What's the difference between DEG and RAD mode?
DEG treats angles in degrees (360° in a circle). RAD uses radians (2π radians in a circle). Use DEG for most school and everyday problems.
Why does sin(30) not equal 0.5 on my calculator?
Make sure DEG mode is selected. In RAD mode, sin(30) ≈ −0.988 because 30 is interpreted as 30 radians, not 30 degrees.
