How this calculator works and what to know before using it

What this calculator does

Finds sale price after a discount, or calculates discount percentage from original and sale prices.

How to use it

  1. Choose whether you know the discount % or the sale price.
  2. Enter original price and the known value.
  3. View final price and savings.

Formula used

Percent off the price

Sale price = original ร— (1 โˆ’ discount% รท 100) ยท Discount% = ((original โˆ’ sale) รท original) ร— 100

Source. The sale price is the original price times 1 minus the discount percent divided by 100. The discount percent from two prices is the difference divided by the original price, times 100.

Common questions

How do I calculate 20 percent off a price?
Multiply the original price by 0.80, or subtract 20% of the price. Example: $50 ร— 0.80 = $40.
Is 20% off plus 10% off the same as 30% off?
No. Sequential discounts multiply: 20% off then 10% off = 0.80 ร— 0.90 = 72% of original (28% total off), not 70%.
